A dripping tap isn't just annoying – it can waste thousands of litres of water a year and cost you money. The good news is that most dripping taps are easy to fix yourself with basic tools.
What You'll Need
- Adjustable spanner or wrench
- Flat-head and Phillips screwdrivers
- Replacement washer or cartridge (take the old one to the shop to match)
- Cloth or towel
Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Turn Off the Water
Find the isolation valve under the sink and turn it off. If there isn't one, turn off the mains water supply. Open the tap to release any remaining water.
Step 2: Remove the Tap Handle
Prise off the decorative cap (usually marked hot or cold), then unscrew the handle. Keep track of all parts in order.
Step 3: Remove the Headgear
Use your spanner to unscrew the headgear nut (the brass part). Turn anti-clockwise to loosen.
Step 4: Replace the Washer
At the bottom of the headgear, you'll find a small rubber washer held by a nut. Remove and replace with a new washer of the same size.
Step 5: Reassemble
Put everything back together in reverse order. Turn the water back on and test – no more drip!
Tip: Modern mixer taps often use ceramic cartridges instead of washers. These are trickier to replace – if in doubt, give us a call.
Still Dripping?
If you've tried replacing the washer and your tap is still dripping, the valve seat might be damaged. Everyday Plumbing can fix it quickly and affordably.
