How to Unblock a Sink, Bath or Shower: DIY Tips

Simple methods to clear blocked basins, baths and showers before calling a plumber.

A blocked sink, bath or shower is one of the most common plumbing problems we see in Northamptonshire homes. Before you call a plumber, there are several DIY methods you can try to clear the blockage yourself.

Signs of a Blockage

Method 1: Boiling Water

The simplest method and often surprisingly effective. Boil a full kettle and pour it directly down the plughole in 2-3 stages, waiting a few seconds between each pour. This can dissolve soap and grease build-up.

Warning: Don't use boiling water on PVC pipes as it can damage the joints. Use hot (not boiling) water instead.

Method 2: Baking Soda & Vinegar

  1. Pour half a cup of baking soda down the plughole
  2. Follow with half a cup of white vinegar
  3. Cover the plughole and wait 30 minutes
  4. Flush with hot water

The fizzing action helps break down blockages naturally without harsh chemicals.

Method 3: Plunger

A classic plunger can work wonders on sinks and baths. Make sure there's enough water to cover the plunger cup, create a tight seal over the plughole, and pump vigorously 15-20 times. The pressure can dislodge blockages.
