A blocked sink, bath or shower is one of the most common plumbing problems we see in Northamptonshire homes. Before you call a plumber, there are several DIY methods you can try to clear the blockage yourself.
Signs of a Blockage
- Water draining slowly from sinks, baths, or showers
- Gurgling sounds coming from plug holes
- Unpleasant smells from plug holes
- Water pooling in the bath or shower tray
Method 1: Boiling Water
The simplest method and often surprisingly effective. Boil a full kettle and pour it directly down the plughole in 2-3 stages, waiting a few seconds between each pour. This can dissolve soap and grease build-up.
Warning: Don't use boiling water on PVC pipes as it can damage the joints. Use hot (not boiling) water instead.
Method 2: Baking Soda & Vinegar
- Pour half a cup of baking soda down the plughole
- Follow with half a cup of white vinegar
- Cover the plughole and wait 30 minutes
- Flush with hot water
The fizzing action helps break down blockages naturally without harsh chemicals.
Method 3: Plunger
A classic plunger can work wonders on sinks and baths. Make sure there's enough water to cover the plunger cup, create a tight seal over the plughole, and pump vigorously 15-20 times. The pressure can dislodge blockages.
