When to Call an Emergency Plumber

Know the difference between a minor issue and a plumbing emergency that needs immediate attention.

Not every plumbing problem is an emergency – but some definitely are. Knowing the difference can save you money (emergency callouts cost more) while ensuring you get help fast when you really need it.

Call Immediately – These Are Emergencies

Burst Pipe or Major Leak

Water gushing from a pipe can cause thousands of pounds of damage within minutes. Ceilings can collapse, electrics can short circuit, and floors can be ruined.

While you wait: Turn off the water at the stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and switch off the electricity if water is near electrics.

Completely Blocked Toilet (Only Toilet in House)

If you only have one toilet and it's completely blocked and overflowing, that's an emergency – you need a working toilet. If you have other toilets available, it can wait until normal hours.

While you wait: Don't keep flushing! Lay towels around the base to contain water.

No Water Supply

If you suddenly have no water at all, first check with neighbours – it might be a mains issue (contact your water company). If it's just your property, there could be a serious leak or stopcock failure.

Check: Ask neighbours if they have water. Check your stopcock is fully open.

Water Coming Through Ceiling

This often indicates a burst pipe or major leak above. The ceiling could collapse, so this needs immediate attention.

While you wait: Turn off water at the stopcock. Place buckets to catch water. Poke a small hole in the ceiling bulge to release water and prevent collapse.

Urgent But Can Wait Until Morning

  • Slow draining sink or bath – annoying but not causing damage
  • Dripping tap – wastes water but can wait for a regular appointment
  • Running toilet – unless water is spilling onto the floor
  • Minor leak you can contain – if a bucket catches it overnight, call in the morning
  • Blocked sink – use another sink until we can get there

What About Gas?

Gas problems are NOT plumbing emergencies – they're gas emergencies.

If you smell gas or suspect a gas leak:

  1. Don't use any electrical switches
  2. Open windows and doors
  3. Turn off gas at the meter if safe to do so
  4. Leave the property
